The world of today is explained by our histories
Black Gold tells the story of when people were traded and transported as nothing more than commodities
It tells the story of how humanity survives in the face of inhumanity
It tells the story of bravery in the face of terror
It tells the story of freedom and victory

Between 1500 and 1800, around 12-15 million people were stolen from Africa to be used as enslaved labour in the Caribbean and the Americas
Over 2 million people died on the journey to the Americas, in a journey known as the Middle Passage
Those who survived this ordeal were sold to work as slaves on plantations
The ships would return to Europe stocked with goods such as cotton, tobacco and sugar from these plantations

People were stolen from their homes and families across the whole of West Africa

They were chained and caged in ports on the coast, till the next batch of slave traders would arrive

They would be loaded into the terrifying dark squalor of the ship’s hold

Many wouldn’t survive the journey; all but a handful would never see home again

But the story of this time is also a story of resistance

Of testing the chains and breaking them free

Of defiance when death was preferable to slavery

And – sometimes – the victory of good over evil

Black Gold tells this story through the eyes of two young people, Isha and Lachlan
They come from different ends of the world, thrown together by chance and the greed of others
This is a story of the past that explains our present
This is a story of freedom and justice against all odds
